The fast pace of this racket sport is what makes badminton so exciting for spectators. Whether it’s a shuttle travelling at over 400 kilometres per hour or a delicate drop shot, there is almost zero margin for error. So understanding the court and how to use the space can make the difference between winning or losing.
Badminton courts are usually laid on wooden flooring on which synthetic mats are used as the court surface. The purpose of the court is to provide comfort and ease to the shuttlers, who move around on the playing surface with smashes and clever strokes to deceive their opponents and win points. Hence it is imperative to keep the court surface clean and proper.
There are two types of competitions in a court – singles and doubles. The court lines are drawn accordingly.

As per the guidelines set by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the length of a standard court remains the same for both types of competitions – 13.40 metres (44 ft). But the width varies, with the singles court being 5.18 metres (17 ft) wide, denoted by the side lines, while the width of the doubles court is extended to 6.1 metres (20 ft), marked as the doubles sidelines. The entire court measures 14.723 metres diagonally.
The court has two halves measuring 6.7 metres (22 ft) in length and separated by a badminton net that is 1.55 metres (5 ft 1 in) high at the ends and drops down to 1.52 metres (5 ft) in the middle.

The two playing areas on either side of the net are divided vertically in the middle by lines marking the service areas. This means that a badminton court has four service courts, each of which is 3.88 metres (12.72 ft) long and 2.53 metres (8.3 ft) wide.
Specific rules have been laid down for service in badminton as per the rules of badminton, the court has two service lines, the short service line, which is 1.98 metres (6.5 ft) away from the net, and the long service line 0.72 metres (2.36 ft) inside the baseline, which is specially marked for this purpose.
In singles, the service must be beyond the short service line and within the boundary lines, while in doubles games, the service must be beyond the short service line but the long service line acts as a marker on the backcourt. This means that the length of service in doubles is shorter than in singles.
